Q:Nikon's website states that the D800 incorporates technology borrowerd from the flagship D4. D800 has 36.3MP compared with 16.2MP on D4. Does this mean that D800 has better  image quality (IQ)?

MP count does not equate to image quality
more pixels does not automatically translate into higher quality but very likely D800 will have better IQ in every aspect, finer details, wider range, better tone, and less noise. let's wait and see.
a simple answer is that more pixels will get us more resolution and other qualities won't be affected.
in real world, more pixels may result in drop of SNR by a small, practically negligible difference, a small gain of dynamic range, and better tone than larger pixels.
coming back to noise, if we do smart noise reduction instead of simple resize only, we can get far better SNR more than enough to cancel the small fraction of performance drop.
so a simpler answer should be: more MPs, better IQ.
many people mistake PQ (pixel quality) for IQ , they are different things.

> With more pixels is it going have more noise
depends on what noise. if you compare pixel to pixel, yes more pixels mean more noise at pixel level, but not necessarily at image level (same area on the sensor).
actually smaller pixels can provide better per area performance that in the future, we may have way more pixels on the sensor far beyond any lens can resolute, not for resolution but for better performance like DR or SNR (per area).

Nikon D4
After many leaks and rumors, Nikon has officially unveiled its new flagship DSLR – the Nikon D4.  In several ways, the Nikon D4 exceeds what Canon offers in terms of HDSLR-video features, all the while maintaining a powerfull still-imaging machine as well.
There are plenty of details below; however, expect some up-close action next week at CES 2012.

Nikon D4 Overview

  • 16.1 megapixel FX format CMOS sensor
  • ISO range from 100-12,800, expandable from 50-204,800
  • 10 fps with full AF/ AE or 11 fps with AF locked
  • Magnesium alloy body sealed to resist the elements
  • Accepts CF and new XQD memory card format
  • 91,000 pixel 3D Matrix Metering system
    • 15 cross type points, with nine points that work with lens speeds of f/8 and below
  • Advanced video features
    • Uncompressed HDMI out
    • Mic and audio jacks
    • Full 1080p in FX, DX and 2.7X crop modes
    • Full manual control of Exposure
  • Available February for $5999.95
The Nikon D800 is rumored to be coming in January or February 2012 and features a 36MP full frame image sensor, along with 1080p video capture at 30p, 25p and 24p frame rates.

The Nikon D800 may very well be a 36MP shooter, which is substantially different from the D4 with its rumored 16MP sensor.
According to Nikon Rumors, the D800 specs include the following:
  • 36 MP sensor (7360×4912)
  • 100% viewfinder coverage
  • Improved AF with face recognition – 51 AF points
  • CF+SD memory card slots (no XQD like the D4)
  • USB 3.0
  • ISO range: 100 – 6400, ISO LO @ 50 and  ISO HI-2 @ 25600
  • Likely 3.2″ LCD
  • No GPS built-in
  • Expeed 3 processor
  • Two different D800 versions, one with the antialiasing filter removed
  • 4 fps continuous shooting, about 6 fps in DX mode with optional battery pack
  • Video modes: 1080p/30/25/24 and 720p/60/30/25/24
  • Headphone jack, can input from an external device such as a PCM sound recorder
  • 86k pixels RGB sensor
  • 200,000 shutter cycles
  • Uncompressed HDMI video out

Nikon D4 with 16MP and XQD Cards Coming Soon?

It looks like both the Nikon D4 and D800 may be just around the corner.  Nikon Rumors picked up word that the full frame Nikon D4 would show up in January at or around PMA/CES 2012.
Nikon Rumors cites a high level of confidence for a 16.2MP shooter that can capture 11 fps and will use the recently announced XQD memory cards.

Nikon D4 Rumored Specs

  • 16.2 MP
  • 11 fps
  • 100-102,400 ISO (exp. to ISO 50 and ISO 204,800)
  • CF and XQD card slots
  • Compatible with new Nikon WT-5 wireless transmitter
  • Integrated ethernet
  • Face detection/recognition
  • Improved video
  • Uncompressed video out via HDMI
  • Smooth aperture control during video capture
  • Improved 51 AF points
  • AF detection range down to EV-2.0 (the D3s went to EV -1)
  • 9 cross-type AF sensors – operational up to f/8
Lots of questions about the camera still; however, should these turn out to be the real deal, the Nikon D4 looks to be a direct response to Canon’s recently-introduced EOS 1D X.  The AF operation at f/8 is sure to stir the forums and may be enough to sway the frustrated birders out there if the AF speed at f/8 is up to snuff.
Additionally, Nikon has lagged behind on video features thus far in the HDSLR race, so it will be interesting to see if this new flagship steps it up in that department as well and matches up to the seriously upgraded video features in the 1D X.

Nikon D800 Images/Specs Leaked

by on November 20, 2011

Nikon D800
It looks like the Nikon D800 has made its way onto the Internet, sporting full front and back shots of her bells and whistles.
Nikon D800
Nikon Rumors revealed the images last night, along with a list of likely specifications, noted below.
  • Smaller and lighter than D700
  • Resolution: 7360×4912 (36MP)
  • CF+SD memory card slots
  • Slightly larger display
  • Excellent video quality, better than D3s
  • Video modes: 1080p/30/25/24 and 720p/60/30/25/24
  • AF identical to D3/D700
However, there’s still no word on the release date.
Of course, this is still a rumor – and it has been cooking along for quite some time now. Although, it is looking more and more like Nikon is going to release a full frame 36MP camera soon.

Nikon D700
It sure hasn’t taken long for the Nikon D800 rumor mill to gather a full head of steam.  The latest rumors/leaks suggest ISO 100-6400 with expansion down to ISO 50 and up to ISO 25,600.  Again, that’s at 36MP.
Additionally, there will be a different version of the D800 without an antialiasing filter.  Along with the D800, we’re told to expect a couple of other product announcements as well (likely lenses).

36MP Nikon D800 Confirmed? Holy Megapixels!

by on October 3, 2011

Nikon D700
Just as I was ready to dismiss the previous rumor of a 36MP-shooting Nikon D800, Nikon Rumors heard from its sources and confirmed this replacement for the still-hard-to-find Nikon D700 is (99%) real and will be unveiled in the next 30-60 days.
Here’s a longer look at the machine-translated spec list:
  • What number of pixels is 3630 megapixels.
  • 4 frames per second continuous shooting in body only, about 6 frames per second will be used to DX mode with the optional battery pack.
  • A little late to be released by the model resolution sought to eliminate the low-pass filter.
  • Full HD video in 1920 × 1080/30p.
  • Headphone jacks, can be input from an external device such as a PCM sound recorder. Corresponding to USB3.0. Be available in new small wireless transmitter.
  • 86K pixel split control, AF, exposure, white balance, etc. compatible. Face Recognition AF features.
  • Larger LCD monitor, automatic brightness adjustment, the structure is not cloudy.
  • Two media CF card and SD card slot.
  • Shutter durability of 200,000 cycles.
  • Market price is about 300,000 yen. The announcement on October 26, released on November 24.
Other factoids from Nikon Rumors’ sources suggest that the noise control won’t be in the same category as the D3s.

Nikon D4 and D400 Due Next Month
by Eric Reagan on June 28, 2011

Rumors: Nikon D4 DSLR with 18mp Sensor to Debut in August 2011

Two new Nikon’s -
The D800, at 20MP, full frame, retail price of $2495.00 and
Nikon DX-4, full frame at 19-20MP with a retail price of $5,000.00
and both will be announced by late September 2011!

Peterson
